As seen in the Yorkshire Post
What was your first job?
Paperboy in Snaith, the small town I recently moved back to. I now get my papers delivered from the same shop I worked for 26 years ago.
If you weren’t in your present position, what would you be doing?
From secondary school, I knew that accountancy was what I wanted to do but my childhood dream was to be a train driver.
What is the worst mistake that you’ve ever made?
That I can put in print… Not getting into running and fitness sooner. I was in my mid-30s before I started taking it seriously.
What’s your ideal day away from the office?
Probably cycling with my family in Yorkshire. We like to park up in Riccall and cycle the solar system cycle path, stopping at the honesty café near Saturn for a drink. Yorkshire is fantastic for cycling, there are at least a dozen traffic-free routes you can cycle.
Name one person you would like to have dinner with and why?
It would be Bill Clinton. I recently listened to his autobiography and I think it would be fantastic listening to his stories.
What was your best subject at school?
It’s obvious, but Maths. I loved it and it got me into accountancy. I don’t use it as much now as accounting is more than just being good at maths, you need to be able to empathise and give advice as well.
What are your hobbies?
Running and cycling with my family. I have done a couple of triathlons, but I’m not a good swimmer. After my family, my other love is Bradford City and I enjoy watching them all over the country with the kids.
What would you do if you won the lottery?
Aside from buying Bradford City… I would love to travel the world watching major sports events. Cricket in the West Indies and the Kentucky Derby would be high on my list.
What is your top time saving tip?
Don’t overthink things. FOBO, the fear of better options, makes people spend too much time worrying about alternative choices. Often the first option is best. Just do it!
What is your favourite time of day?
First thing in the morning while it’s quiet, the day is still and before the rest of the house wakes up. Not saying I’m a morning person, I just like that half an hour of peace to have a coffee and get ready for the day.
What is your favourite item of clothing?
A pair of shorts. It means that I’m relaxing, running, cycling or on holiday. Much as I enjoy my job, shorts signify that it is time to unwind.
What is your favourite thing about Yorkshire?
Other than Bradford City… it’s Yorkshire’s vastness and variety. You could be having great fish and chips in Filey or an amazing curry in Bradford and everything between.
What would your epitaph be?
“He was a good bloke”.
