My Yorkshire feature – Jon Cooper, Partner, Pontefract

Where do you live/where are you from?
I’m from Wakefield, born and bred.
What is your favourite place to visit in Yorkshire and why?
I have a real soft spot for York. My wife and I got married there and we visit two to three times a year, including on our wedding anniversary. So much to see and do and our kids love visiting the National Railway Museum, as do I.
What is still on your “to do” list in the region?
A trip on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, starting with the Santa Special!
What is the most memorable meal you’ve ever had in Yorkshire?
It was a meal at the Wensleydale Heifer in Leyburn. We stayed there one Christmas and new year and the food was amazing!
What is your most Yorkshire trait?
Being tight. I’ve always been careful with my money, since being a kid.
Favourite piece of trivia about the region?
If Yorkshire was a country we’d have been 12th in the 2012 Olympics medal table and 14th in 2016.
What is your favourite cultural icon to come out of Yorkshire?
If sport can be classed as a cultural icon it’s rugby league for me.
First experience of Yorkshire (for non-Yorkies)
Worst experience or thing about Yorkshire?
The flat caps and whippet stereotype. That, and the M62.
What is one thing you’d steal from Lancashire (or other UK regions) if you could?
The extra few degrees of warmth from down south. I’m not a fan of the cold.
What is the most overrated thing about Yorkshire?
Yorkshire puds. I like them but I think they get far better press than they deserve!
